The longer you work in music production, the more you realise that the production is not the most important thing. It's the song, always the song!
I'd go even further to say that good songwriting and arrangement does a huge part of the producing and mixing. By creating space for everything in the arrangement, the rest of the process is an absolute breeze. The song will mix itself.
No matter how much i love knobs and mixing and all that, there's no bigger thrill than writing the perfect melody, lyric or riff. Especially in collaboration with others. Love it, let's make something!
Producing is a term that's very widely used nowadays. To one person it means programming a beat and calling it a day. To another person it means completely shaping the music of a band and putting their own sound on it.
To me producing means getting the best out of the artist/band i work with, and making them sound not only their best, but most like themselves!
The key to this: Listening and noticing. That's it. I listen and point out when i hear things i like. Often times these are things that the band themselves doesn't notice. I really enjoy giving the fresh perspective and appreciation that i get back.
The process of mixing has a special place in my heart. It's a beautiful flow to get into. For mixing i work a 100% "in the box", meaning i only use digital tools. The sound of plug-ins is at a level nowadays that is indistinguishable from their analog counterparts. But the sound isn't even the most important thing, which is: speed & flexibility.
You have to work fast! That way your ears don't get too fatigued. Tired ears means clouded perspective. And perspective is all you have when working on music. You need to make the right decisions, no second guessing, no messing around.
To make professional, impactful sounding mixes with all real recorded instruments takes years and years of doing it. I'd love to help you with this!
Mastering is best done by a second set of ears, especially if the mixer has limited experience. That fresh perspective of a mastering engineer is the single biggest benefit of the mastering stage.
In mastering the overal tonal balance, dynamics and volume differences between songs are fine tuned. This can make a drastic impact on how well the mix translates to all kinds of listening situations. This requires a very high quality playback system.
At Klein Soundworks we have the perfect tool for this: Neumann KH310A 3-way speakers. Listening to these speakers is a special experience. It gives an extremely realistic and uncolored view on the music and i'm more than happy to put them to work for you!
Since i was 8 years old, i've been playing drums. Holy shit that was 2001, that's a long ass time ago. I quickly became absolutely obsessed with it and played many hours a week. I've always had lessons and learned from some really great drummers.
In my teenage years i really got into louder styles of music; rock, metal, hardcore, that type of stuff, played in many bands. I also started a Youtube channel playing drum covers. You can check that out here:

I have always been captivated by the art of making songs. As a kid on a small yamaha keyboard i messed with the "song mode" more than actually playing the keys.
I'm just old enough that my first experience recording music was on tape. I used an old Fostex XR-7 4-track recorder to record my own drums and mini-songs. I think this is really cool, but i'm also very grateful that DAW's came along to make life a whole lot easier.
Like Andrew Scheps said: "All the people that are nostalgic for tape never actually worked on tape. It's a nightmare"
In 2010 i got accepted into the Conservatory of Amsterdam. I was super thrilled and hugely enjoyed the 4 years that followed. It was in these 4 years that i truly transformed from just a drummer to a producer.
That school really focusses on making songs, which i love. From learning about recording, to learning about harmony, to lyric writing, to a learning little of all the other instruments. You get it all, no matter the main instrument you play.
I graduated summa cum laude (9) with a bunch of friends and broadened horizons.
Since graduating the conservatory in Amsterdam i have steadily been making records and there's no stopping it, because i love it!
I mainly focus on "band" music, because it's where i excel. I also think that it's harder to make a recording of a full band sound good as opposed to a singer/songwriter or a vocal on a beat. By helping bands achieve their goals i think i'm of the greatest value that i can be.
Let's make some music!

This is at my personal studio in Kalmthout where we can record vocals, guitars, keys, etc.
For recording a full band at once, recording drums and other big instruments i'd like to rent a studio with a nice live room. This is of course at the cost of the client and will have to be paid up front. I have multiple studio options for this purpose in the Netherlands and Belgium, so i'm sure we can find the right fit for the project.
